Important Tips For Group Interviews and the Video Submission:
Shooting Individual Submissions as a Group:
One of the amazing things about this tribe is that we all support one another. You can all get together, but then record each person's individual submission to upload. Then do a whole group dance submission. This allows your individuals to shine with the support of their group.
You also can decide to pose as a group and pre-determine a few people to answer a specific question. Then the group is the focus, the individuals get to share, and the love comes through. Then, do a group dance submission.
You will need to email a list that includes the following: Group name and location, individual names, witch names, and email address. We will then follow up with individual talent release forms. Here is what the talent release form states:
What to Wear and Setting the Scene:
Make magic when creating your submission!
- Read through the submission questions and tips to help you prepare for your submission ritual!
- Dress and wear makeup that makes you feel like your authentic witchy self. Burn incense, ground yourself - do whatever sets the mood for you to be comfortable. Do NOT however play music during the interview portion of your submission videos. You can play music in the dance submission.
- Your backdrop should not distract from the video (unless you have a really cool magical space!). Avoid logos, business names. You may have to provide a location release if it is clear you are filming in a business/public location.
- Frame individual interviews in a medium shot - head and shoulders. Small group can frame everyone and dance videos can be a mixture.
Camera Tips for self-submissions:
Please record group submissions in individual files on your device. Then upload to the magical portal. Recording into the magical portal directly is not recommended for longer group submissions.
- Shoot the video in landscape mode. Hint: Turn your camera sideways.
- Important: If shooting on an Ipad, compress the video. It may not allow you to submit otherwise. The video must be under 250mb.
- Use the highest resolution setting (at least 1920 x 1080) for your camera. Please note: this is not an absolute requirement since we don’t want to omit compelling stories just because you don’t have access to the latest and greatest camera.
- Try to get as steady a shot as possible. Use a smartphone tripod if you have one.
- Don't sit in front of a window and be sure you are well lit.
- Be sure your background does not detract from your message. Make sure there is not a clock or moving ceiling fan in the video.
- Make sure there isn't background noise (TV, music, fish tank bubbler)
- Avoid capturing logos, videos, images, music, and any other material that might be copyrighted or trademarked.
- If having someone else film you, do not have them zoom in or do any fancy video effects. Frame the shot and keep it simple.
What to and not to include in your answers
- Be yourself and speak from the heart.
- Keep individual statements/answers to questions in the submission portal brief - under one minute. Remember, this is a film made of curated video so each “scene” or “shot” in the final edit will be very brief, 30 secs to a minute in most instances. Each group video should be no more than 5 minutes.
- Do not disclose too much personal information. Use your witch names (or first name only) and be more general in location.
- Think of what makes your group story unique. What experiences, feelings, and connection have you made from Dancing with Witches?
The Questions:
You do not have to answer all questions. Remind each member that their individual answer should be only 30 seconds to a minute (but do not rush). The group submission interview answer should not exceed 5 minutes. Shorter is better as submissions cannot exceed 250 mb.
Submissions may be followed up with an in person or online interview.
Choose any of the following questions to answer, or just share your own ideas!
- Introduce yourselves using your first or witch name. Without mentioning specific business names/locations, tell us who you are/what you do - and comparatively, who you are when you are dancing with witches. Who are you when your not being told who to be?
- Do you identify as a Witch? Why or why not? Do others consider you a witch? How does the group support your witchyness?
- Describe how you felt the first time you met and danced with a group or performed the witch dance How does this group supports each other and the community?
- Do you feel society is accepting of witches or those who dance as witches? Please share a positive and negatives of reactions to your group dancing as witches.
- How has dancing with witches changed your life? What does this experience give you?
- Be creative and share anything else important to your story.
- Share a video of you all just having fun or sharing an activity, rehearsal, or being yourselves.
- Share a video of you performing as a group (no longer than 5 minutes)
