Meet the Creative TeamThe Project
“I Dance With Witches” captures the stories of women who have found connection in “The Witch Dance.’ The dance is a recreation of Wolfshäger Hexenbrut’s 2016 viral video to the Peter Foxx song Schüttel deinen Speck. The video is widely shared on social media during the Halloween season, though historically, the group's performance is part of a tradition of Walpurgis night in the Harz Mountains of Germany. Wolfshäger Hexenbrut’s creative witch costumes inspire women to bring out their inner witch. German choreographer Antje Wedde’s creative choreography blends magic with belly dance to Peter Foxx’s hypnotic techno beat.
Since 2017, witchy dance groups have popped up around the world, especially in the US, performing at community/charity events, parades, and renaissance faires. Consisting mainly of women between the ages of 35-70, performance of the dance represents much more than a public gathering. Many of these women are reinventing themselves, after raising children and taking care of their aging parents. Individual participants seek out local chapters or start their own group. The groups are generally made up of strangers, who quickly become a sisterhood who support the member’s personal growth. Groups meet regularly for rehearsals and social events such as witch walks, witches on the water, paint nights, and witchy weekends.
Women embracing this journey often find their family and friends think they have gone a bit crazy. Dressing as witches, going out with complete strangers, and dancing in public is “out of character”, But soon the joy, confidence, and peacefulness of the experience carries over to their personal lives, and relationships are made stronger, and family members are there to cheer them on.
While they dress as witches, most of the groups do not identify as a coven, nor do they practice spells or witchcraft. There are witches in the groups. And while dancing is the focus, most embrace their “inner witch”. Witches that are in the groups often share their magic, holding workshops and leading their group in intention.
This project embraces all of these women's "inner witch", the magic of the dance, and the empowerment of these women to change the world.

"A lot of women hide their true self sometimes because of lack of confidence or being judged by others. In dancing with witches, we support one another. We honor each other’s feelings. We lift each other up. It is a way of showing each other, as women, that we all are magical beings. Because everybody is being their own “self”, which is honoring those around them, and trying to lift and light their way. "

"Dancing with Witches has changed my life. My witchy sisters are my support system. We laugh, we cry, and we dance. I have more of a connection with these women than people I have known all my life...and I've only been dancing for three years "
